Heart Failure

Heart Failure Surgery

Heart failure may be caused by a number of conditions and there may be a number of procedures which could be carried out to stop further deterioration or even reverse the failure and improve the function of the heart.
Heart Surgical Procedures

  1. CABG - Coronary artery bypass surgery
  2. Aortic Valve Surgery
  3. Mitral Valve Surgery
  4. TAVI
(These have been detailed previously)

Specialist Procedures

Occasionally it may be necessary to perform surgery on the heart muscle itself. These can be associated with increased risk because of poorer heart muscle function. These procedures include:

  • LV Aneurysmectomy - A procedure to cut out (excise) a portion of the heart that has turned to scar tissue because of a previous heart attack. This can help the remaining heart muscle function more efficiently.
  • Ventricular Remodelling - A procedure to place a patch inside the main pumping chamber of the heart to reduce the size and allow the heart to pump more efficiently.
  • VSD repair - these are often complex operations to patch a hole between the left and right pumping chambers. The are often does as an emergency but sometimes performed electively if patients are stable.
